Recognizing the needs of the current
generation of warriors, the leadership of the NGWRC created a plan for a new
service organization. After months of planning and hard work, they announced the
establishment of the Veterans of Modern Warfare, Inc. (VMW), a veterans’
service organization formed to serve veterans and members of the armed forces of
this modern era.
Shortly after the initiation of Operations Enduring Freedom / Iraqi Freedom, we
realized the mission of the NGWRC must change to include the veterans that have
participated in the Global War on Terror. Although the missions of these
deployments are different, issues such as mass-vaccinations, depleted uranium
exposures, and post-traumatic stress are commonly shared by Persian Gulf War and
Global War on Terror veterans alike.
Nothing is wrong with Am Vets,
American Legion, VFW, DAV, PVA, or any other large veteran’s organization. We
encourage our own members to join, support, and participate in other veterans
organizations with a broader mandate. Other post WW
II veterans have benefited from having an organization for their own
generation’s specific needs; Korean Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, and Cold War
Veterans each have an organization specific to their time of service, and those
organizations help focus the agendas of the rest on the specific needs of their
generation.
VMW is that organization for the
post-Cold-war generation. There is no organization doing this effectively yet,
and the NGWRC was as close as we had up to this point. NGWRC formed VMW to meet
this unmet need, and to cooperate with the broader veterans organizations in
helping the new generation
The formation of Veteran’s of Modern
Warfare does not mean that the National Gulf War Resource Center will no longer
exist; quite the opposite. Since 1995, the mission of the NGWRC has been to
support an international coalition of advocates, organizations, and members by
providing information, support, and referrals for all those concerned with the
complexities of Persian Gulf War issues, e.g. Gulf War Illness.
